MGAHINGA GORILLA NATIONAL PARK ‘’ WHERE SILVER MEETS GOLD’’
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kisoro district. It’s the smallest national park and less visited, gazetted in 1991, covering 33.7km2. famously known for the Golden monkey trekking, only found here in Uganda, and mountain gorilla trekking.
The park is inhabited by 3 inactive volcanoes, that are Mount Gahinga with 3474meters, Sabyinyo 3645meters, and Muhavura 4127meters. This is the second park where you can do gorilla trekking with one habituated Nakakagazi gorilla family and Uganda’s smallest national park.
The park is home to over 36 mammal species, namely, elephants, bushbuck, black fronted duiker, giant forest hog, bush pigs, buffalo, as well as primates like golden monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkey, and mountain gorillas. And over 115 bird species, including the Albertine rift valley endemics such as handsome spurfowl, red-throated alethe, dusky crimson-winged Kivu ground thrush, archer’s ground, double collared sunbird, collared apalis, regal sunbird, strange weaver, montane nightjar, red-faced woodland warbler, Grauer’s swamp warbler, not to mention but a few.

Batwa culture

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, approximately 510 km from Kampala, the capital city. To get to Mgahinga, you can take the following options:
By Road: Drive from Kampala to Kisoro via Kabale, a journey that takes around 8-10 hours. From Kisoro to Mgahinga National Park is about 14 km away.
By Air: Fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kisoro Airstrip, which takes about 1 hour. From Kisoro to Mgahinga National Park.
When to visit
The best time to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is during the dry seasons, from June to August and from December to February, offering dry trails, easier hiking, and better visibility for wildlife viewing. However, the park is open year-round, and the shoulder seasons, March to May and September to November, have fewer tourists, lush vegetation, and lower prices. Gorilla trekking is available throughout the year, but permits should be booked in advance, especially during peak season, and visitors should be prepared for sudden weather changes.
