MOUNTAIN ELGON NATIONAL PARK
Mountain Elgon Forest National Park is located in eastern Uganda, near the Kenyan border. Mountain Elgon is a majestic volcanic mountain with a rich history, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking scenery. It covers 1279km. Mount Elgon is an important water catchment for the Nzoia River, which flows into Lake Victoria, and the Turkwe River, which flows into Lake Turkana.
Geologically, the park is 24 million years old, making it one of the national parks known for extinct volcanoes in East Africa. It also consists of five major peaks, namely: Wagagai with 4,321 meters, Sudek with 4,302 meters, Koitobos with 4,222 meters, Mbiyi with 4,211 meters and Masaba with 4,161 meters.
The climate in the park is moist to moderately dry, and the park has a variety of over 20 mammal species elephants, buffalo, leopards, bushbucks, squirrels, as well as Monkey species, including the black and white colobus monkey and the red-tailed monkey, the blue monkey, Vervet monkey. It’s a home to over 144 bird species such as the eastern Bronze raped pigeon, Blue flycatcher, White chinned prinia, Jackson’s francolin, Tacazze sunbird not to mention but a few.

How to get there
Mount Elgon National Park can be accessed by using both road transport and air transport. By road, the park is accessed from Kampala via Jinja and Mbale, which is approximately 5-6 hours by road. You can also fly to Soroti airstrip and then drive for about an hour to the park.
